This Love

wedding kiss

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner I can’t help but think back to my first Valentine’s Day with my husband 13 years ago…we were juniors in high school and had only been dating a few months. I still remember him hiding the “newest” Maroon 5 CD in my locker (Songs About Jane).

Oh how life was so simple back then. When our biggest worry as a couple was if we would be on time in the parking lot so we could walk into school together!

But after all of the years, I love my husband just as much as I did 13 years ago.

It’s a changing love though, one that grows each day even. We’ve been married for seven and a half years and if I told you all those years were a story book romance, I would be lying. We’ve learned that marriage takes A LOT more than just love.

Honestly, it takes work. It takes knowing that the person you are marrying is imperfect— and needs constant forgiveness. And that’s a whole lot easier to say than actually do.

One of the biggest pieces of advice my husband and I received before we were married was how hard it would be to forgive each other for the everyday “little things.”  It’s the daily grind of life you need to love each other through—leaving clothes on the floor, piles of dishes in the sink, the list goes on…

The big obstacles have come and will continue to come too.

But day in and day out we remind ourselves to say “I love you.” We laugh about a stupid fight we had minutes before. We kiss each other when one of us walks through the door.

We WORK on it.

I’m no expert, but I can tell you if you enter into marriage expecting a fairy tale, you are in for a rude awakening. No marriage is perfect. And without Jesus at the center, the fight will be even harder.

Whether you are dating, single, or married my friend, I pray you have a wonderful Valentine’s day filled with love from those around you!
