Gender Neutral Nursery on a Budget

One of my favorite places in our house is my daughter’s nursery. It is so peaceful and calming to me. We did not know if we were having a boy or a girl so I tried to keep the décor as neutral as possible.

The dresser and armoire were both repurposed. The armoire was my husband’s back in high school and I can’t believe I almost got rid of it! I am so glad I didn’t! The dresser is a craigslist find I owe to my awesome friend from Texas, Stephanie. She had the vision.

Here are some before and after photos and a brief rundown of what we did. We used Annie Sloan chalk paint. Let me just tell you, DO NOT USE ANY OTHER KIND OF CHALKPAINT! This stuff is the best! My dad has used the Annie Sloan and also tried the Lowe’s brand. He says there is no comparison. The Annie Sloan is worth every penny!

Stephanie sanded the top of the dresser several times using a circular sander. This was the hardest part. She then stained the top using Minwax Espresso stain with a Minwax satin poly coat. We painted the base and all the drawers in Annie Sloan Pure White. I did three coats and then used the clear Annie Sloan wax. I used a regular paintbrush for the chalkpaint and a thick wax brush from Hobby Lobby for the wax. There are tons of tutorials on Annie Sloan paint online or you can just talk to the salesperson at the store on how to use it! They are usually pretty knowledgeable!

(Sorry for the before shot, I remembered to snap a photo as I was in the process of painting!)

For the armoire, I painted the entire piece in French Linen. I then used a stencil from Hobby Lobby for the design on the doors. I just used the left over Pure White for this. This was probably the most time consuming because I am such a perfectionist! Finally I put the wax coat on.

All of the knobs and pulls for both the dresser and armoire are from Hobby Lobby and I made sure to wait until they were 50% off!

Here are a few other photos of her room with details on where I got everything. We already had the rocking chair and didn’t have to buy any big-ticket items since the crib and mattress were a gift from my mom & dad!

The crib is the Babyletto Modo 3-in-1 Convertible Crib I got from Wayfair (with a 10% off coupon). The wall pallet and banner are from Hobby Lobby (50% off). The rug, pillow, lamp, bedding, and blackout curtains are from Target. The night stand is from Home Goods. The wall color is  Lowes’ Allen+Roth Rain Puddle mixed at 25% lighter. The blanket was a gift made by a former co-worker. The needle point picture in the back was made for my nursery by my great aunt! My mom saved it for the last 30 years!

The decorations on top of the armoire as well as the hamper are from Home Goods. The wall decorations above the dresser are from Hobby Lobby (50% off). The basket on the dresser and changing pad cover are from Target.

This piece was handmade by my amazing friend Sarah!

I love how many things are specially made in E’s nursery! It is that much more meaningful to me!
